Malapascua diving at a glance
Malapascua is one of two island barangays, together with Carnaza, in the municipality of Daanbantayan at the northern tip of Cebu. The municipality describes it as a world-renowned island with white sand, clear water and diving spots, and promotes the thresher sharks and Japanese shipwrecks. The Cebu provincial government describes the island, together with Moalboal, as supported by marine conservation programmes while also warning of over-tourism pressure.
Monad Shoal
The Philippine government's travel site describes Monad Shoal as an underwater plateau where thresher sharks and manta rays are regularly seen. Sources are cautious on how often; sightings are usually made at first light.
Small island, long history of fishing
Livelihoods on the island depend largely on tourism and fishing, according to a Philippine social welfare report.
